Reading Goals for 2024

If you’re a keen reader, do you set reading goals? I set them for different areas in my life – health, fitness and garden are just a few. I also set goals for reading. You can make your reading goals as simple as reading more books than the previous year. You can also make your reading goals go a bit more indepth. It’s up to you. Your reading goals can be anything that you want them to be.

Some readers set reading goals to encourage them to read more often. The intention of the goals that I set isn’t for that purpose. Reading is a natural mindset for me. I read every day and listen to audio books every day. It’s not something that I ever have to remind myself to do. Setting goals helps me to bring a focus to the books that I choose to read. For example, one of my goals last year was to increase the number of female authors I read.

Following are the goals that I have set for 2024.

Goals for 2024

  • Read the unread books on my bookshelf. I set this goal every year, but usually forget about it, as new books are released.
  • Paticipate in the 52 Week Book Club Challenge to read 52 books every year to a particular prompt
  • My Goodreads reading goal for 2024 is to read 120 books.
  • Expand the genres that I read. I tend to make historical fiction my automatic go to genre, and have trouble moving to a different genre. Though I have become more of a crime reader in 2023
  • Read more non fiction books
  • Read more pages than I read this year. Goodreads will give me the number of pages read at the end of the year. By increasing the number of pages, I will be reminded not to skip over books with more pages than usual, just to reach my reading goal. There are a few large books that are on my TBR for 2024.
  • Read at least four classics
  • Make a mid year evaluation of the progress of my goals
  • Be willing to stop reading a book that I’m not enjoying. It’s always possible to come back to it another time. It may not have been the right time for that particular book

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all. I do appreciate the support of everyone who drops by. Have a happy and safe new year, and I look forward to reconnecting in 2024.

  1. Hi Jen, great goals for 2024. We’ve had two huge moves in the last 5 years and each time we have divested ourselves of many of our books. We both use e-readers mostly these days, although I do love the feel and smell of a physical book. Downsizing restricts what we can store unfortunately. I’ll be participating in the 2024 52 Book club reading challenge. I enjoyed 2023 and it did provide some different authors and genres for me to try. I haven’t really looked at the list for next year and will probably do that between Christmas and New Year. I surpassed my Goodreads goal of 90 books, having read 103 so far. Have a lovely Festive Season and I hope you get time off work so you can perhaps indulge in your love of reading. x

  2. Hi, Jennifer – Great post! I don’t usually set reading goals for myself (other than to read less which I hope to do next year — partly because I don’t tend to just read a book, I marry it and go down numerous rabbit holes which can take me days to emerge from, which then prevents me from engaging in other things that I want to do as well – like hike!)

I did find your goals very inspiring. Here is how my reading for 2023 went when measured against your goals.

Read unread books from my bookshelf: 1 (Little Women). I would definitely like to read more from my current bookshelf for next year.

Participate in Challenges: I didn’t participate in any reading challelnges but I did decrease my bookclubs from 5 to 2 which seems right for me at this time.

According to Goodreads I read 55 books so far this year. I am part way through another so it will definitely be 56.

    Expand Genres: Classics (19), Modern Fiction (18), Nonfiction (10), Christmas (8) Biography (2) Crime/horror/thrillers (0)

Number of pages read: 15,340 (I am not sure what it was last year but I have read 10 less total books this year) which I was good with.

Classics: 19. This definitely is my favourite genre.

Midyear Evaluation of Reading: Not formally but I do maintian my Goodreads account faithfully and write a review for every book that I read.

Be willing to stop a book if not enjoying. 0. I do not have this skill. I am way too much of a completion freak (FOMO).

Thank you for your thought-provoking post.

  4. Hi Jen, my reading goals for 2024 is to actually read! I love to read but never seem to find time. I actually did read a book recently. I bought it for my sister as part of her Christmas gift and read it myself before I wrapped it up for her. Hooray – I read something! Thank you so much for linking up with #WWWhimsy – hope to see you back on 17 Jan when we kick off again for 2024. Meanwhile, have a wonderful Christmas and best wishes for a happy and healthy 2024! xo

  5. Thank you so much to taking the time to send such a detailed reply. It is so interesting to see your responses. I haven’t checked my pages read yet. I used to have trouble not finishing a book, but as I’ve gotten older I find it much easier to give up on one that I’m not enjoying. Merry Christmas to you and your family Donna.

  6. I’ve been downsizing the books also Sue. I would much rather read a ‘paper; book, so I do that with library books these days. I’ve come to love reading on the kindle. Well done on breaking right through on your Goodreads goal, and good luck for the 52 week challenge next year. Merry Christmas to your and your family. Look forward to connecting further in 2024.

  7. I love that quote at the end – so true! Your reading goals are very impressive, I definitely need to raise my game because I think I could count the books I’ve read this year on one hand (and still have fingers left over!) Hope you’ll update us on your reading goals throughout the year. Wishing you a fabulous festive season and hope that 2024 is full of good health, good fortune and good reads!

  8. I’ll aim for my usual 52 books as usual- some years I pass, even reading more…sometimes like this year I don’t do so well.

At one time I had a fun challenge of ‘reading my house rates’. . checking the average price of the books I read on Booktopia, then (on paper not in real life) deducting from my yearly rate bill. I don’t buy books these days, just use the council funded library or borrow from others so they don’t actually cost me anything but I do like to get my moneys worth from the books I borrow from the libraries. Seeing the total go down used to encourage me to read more😊

  9. That challenge sounds fun. I also spend very little on books these days. Fortunately I usually get either books or gift cards that I can spend on books as gifts. Other than that it’s mostly the library. I do download free books from Amazon. Some of them I’ve really enjoyed.

  12. Wow, 120 book goal on Goodreads for 2024! That’s amazing. I haven’t set my reading goal yet. I usually keep it low so it’s achievable, my 2023 reading year was out of the norm for me.

Happy holidays, Jennifer. I look forward to reading your reviews in 2024.

  13. Those are great goals. I always plan to be more purposeful about my reading and then fail miserably. This year I need to read more recent psychological/domestic suspense so I’ll have some comparable titles when I’m ready to query agents for my novel in progress. But also, I need to spend more time revising my novel in progress, which will cut down on my reading time.

  14. I started setting goals a few years ago. I’m trying to decide how many books I want to read in 2024. I like your thought process for how you choose. I just pick a number…lol. Though last year I did 12 books from 12 friends and that was good because it caused me to read books I might not otherwise read.

I have several unread books and decided the other day I need to start reading them.

Thanks for making me think through a bit more how I choose.

  15. Your goals are a good model to follow.
I will be doing the 52 Book Club in 2024 for the first time.
It took me a long time to meet your last goal “Be willing to stop reading a book that I’m not enjoying” but now I am committed to it. I’m not going to waste my precious times on books that don’t resonate with me.

  16. I agree with you Jill. It also took me ages to get my head around a DNF. I still struggle with it a bit which is why it’s one of my goals. I’m slowly coming around to realise that life is too short

  18. Hi Min I just found this comment in spam with a handful of others. I have no idea why but will have to keep a look out. I agree, time for reading is always an issue. I don’t sleep well, so do most of my reading in the early morning hours. Wishing you and your family a Happy New Year
